Are “Designer” Cakes the New Fashion Trend?

I decided to have a party. If you’re having a party these days, one of the first things to consider is the cake. What theme will it be? What should it say to your guests? And last, but certainly not least, who will design it? Gone are the days when you’d go to your local bakery to order a cake, and the only question to consider was, “Chocolate or vanilla?”  Any party these days demands a gifted designer to create a special treat for both the eye and the palate. After all, the cake is the edible centerpiece of most gatherings and ‘speaks’ loudly to the guests who oooo & ahhhh when it appears—not unlike they do when a model appears on the runway wearing something to die for. (And then there are the cupcakes, macarons, cookies and pastries to be designed …and eaten.)  I have no issues with the Marie Antoinette quote…I love cake.

This new trend toward “designer cakes” was mentioned recently in the Women’s Wear Daily article on Charlotte Neuville, a seventh avenue ex-pat who decided to merge her vast fashion-designing experience with her lifelong love of the pastry arts. She is known, appropriately, as “The Fashion Chef.”

It’s a title well deserved after 30 years of designing her own line in addition to designing for several other well known names on seventh avenue. What a bold career move. I guess you’ve got to “Follow Your Bliss.”

Having recently designed a football themed cake for my dad’s birthday, I think I like this trend. I’m raring to go! If only there were 48 hours in the day. I leave you with some fun cakes & cookie designs I found while surfing the net. Food for thought?
